Nice day today. It was yesterday too. Seems I sleep in until about 2 on Sundays no matter if I napped on Saturday or how late I stayed up. Went to the park for a while, took some pictures.

Dated last night's entry 2006. Huh.
Learned a wonderful but simple little arpeggio exercise this morning. Group practice involved some more work with Diana, we did a sort of group-loop improv playing off her dancing. Someone from KCTS came by to watch/listen during the second half – some work on KFAD and then circulations in E harmonic minor – we'll see where that leads.
Did some clothes shopping, needed some more pants and also a new gig shirt. Got two candidates for the latter, not sure which will work better yet. Grabbed some dinner. Played bass – just 30 minutes or so, but for the first time in a couple weeks and now I have a lentil-sized blister on my middle RH finger to show for it. Watched some TV - Alien vs. Predator, which was a lot better than I expected. I had very low expectations. Which reminds me, I watched Walking Tall the other day, and that was also better than expected. Actually pretty well done, with some really nice shots in it.
Felt better today – sore throat is almost gone, a bit stuffed up though.

Mid-day yesterday my throat started getting sore. By this morning it was still sore, and swollen, so I stayed home. Got a little better as the day went on.

It was dark today. The sun was out yesterday, but today the clouds were so thick it was actually dark.
"Bring your daughter or son to work day" today, the office was crawling with kids.
Watched American History X - what a movie. It's been 5 or so years since I saw it last, and I think I'm good for another five now.

Had dinner with Tizzy tonight. Got some interesting perspective on recent events. Also found out that we have a some things in common regarding our own personal work in life these days. Meanwhile, sounds like she may be moving to New York next year, though the plan would be for just a year or so.
Spent most of today playing games. Not bad.

Listening to some new recordings that Guitarrastrofe have up on their myspace page... ah, just figured out something that confused me. One of the comments on their page is addressed to "Marcos". Thought at first someone had confused Luis with Marcos R. from Chile. Just now noticed again that their location is listed as "Marcos Juarez, Cordoba, Argentina". Yes, that's a place, not a person, dear poster.
Did some recording today. More fragments. A tympani beat and some voice. Found a somewhat Lisa-Gerrard-ish sound, it involves really pulling the tongue back quite a bit. Also stumbled on something interesting, singing an Ab w/ the 5th harmonic, a C – when I brought in the first subharmonic, its 9th harmonic (a Bb) was accentuated at the same time, making for a 9/8 major second interval up there. I'm not sure yet why this sounds like an interval -- other times when I've found positions that cause two nearby harmonics to both be prominent, it's more of a timbral thing than a noticeable interval (in the same way that, if you just go "aaaaa" and let all the harmonics ring out, you don't hear it as a big huge chord).
SC board meeting at Jaxie's today. We invited Hank and Christina, and extended the idea of making them board members. Those of us currently on the board have no real experience with such things; so we know just enough to get by in the case where Seattle Circle exists solely as liability protection and for the tax-exempt status of a non-profit (we couldn't rent the space we are in now if we weren't a 501c(3) officially). The two of them have more experience with the stuff that would be involved if we were to do things like go after some grants.
It was pretty nice out there today. Somehow I missed most of that, in here recording, so I was a bit surprised when I went out to drive up to the board meeting. Dark clouds here and there, but sunny and lukewarm. Grabbed some dinner – pho – on the way back.
I've always had some issues with eye contact. Well, I don't really know about times before, say, college; I didn't really notice it, but I'm guessing that I pretty much just didn't make eye contact with anyone very much or for very long. Since then I've noticed that it is a very hard thing to do. It's kind of like holding a hot cup in your hand. There's a second or so where you don't really feel it, then it starts to get uncomfortable, and that feeling seems to grow exponentially with time. There have been a few exceptions, certainly, but only a few. It seems to be getting "better" recently as I've been noticing it however.
Anyway, what got me thinking about this was that I noticed my reactions to being in the other seat – encounters with people who don't make any eye contact. For instance, passing an acquaintance on the street or in the hall. It may be someone that I'd like to smile and say "hi" to, but if they don't make eye contact, or look away quickly, I can't do it. There's a long and winding road about why that may be, but one thing that I got out of this immediately and directly was the experience other people may have when I am that person.

8 – 4: AT workshop w/ Sandra Bain Cushman and Frank Sheldon. Good stuff. Haven't had enough AT lessons recently, myself. The first half included some good circulation work w/ a larger group of fifteen guitarists. Correction, fifteen guitarists and one singer/painter who in this case was tapping on a glass when it came her turn to play.
Went to the BBQ joint nearby for lunch. Hadn't been there in a couple years. It's good. Probably not so good for you though.
Home, tried to nap for a bit but I'm not sure how much I actually slept. Later, headed back up town to Mr. Spot's to see Electrochakra. Yet another configuration, this time w/ a new guy on drums and Igor now on bass. They rocked. Spot's is a funky venue, but not too bad. Got some dinner while I was there – a veggie pita thingy. Good.
Spent some more time messing around w/ the Echoplex. Got the manual today, but didn't really look through it yet.

Back felt generally OK today, though the muscle that spasmed (what? that's not a word??) is tight, if I lower my head to about horizontal it pulls taught.
Sunny but cold today. The weather service said 49 when I got home around 10, I think it was a bit colder than that out there.
Bought an Echoplex from GregM yesterday. Messed around with it a bit tonight – dunno what I'm doing, I don't get the manual until Saturday. Did figure out how to get a loop going. Mixed results. Annoyed that the input is really easily overdriven – I really had to dial back the tube preamp to avoid the fuzz. I also don't have a dedicated mic pre, I've just been using the mixer for that. But the aux sends/returns on the mixer are pretty lame (I think, actually, broken in some ways). Was thinking about getting a new mixer anyway, but maybe now I'll get a mic pre. . .

Picked up the car – it's now got a new fuel pump, some new washers and bushings in the drivetrain, and an adjusted e-brake, all under warranty. The brakes did some really bad shuddering when I first pulled out of the parking spot, but after I drove around the block things were normal so I decided not to go bug them about it. Still OK.
A day not unlike many others other than that. Oh, except that the muscles along my spine in between my shoulder blades decided to spasm as I got in the car this morning. A minute or two sitting there making funny noises and just breathing, relaxing, ensued. After that it was just sore but not enough to really bother me.

Dropped the car off at the shop this morning. Picked up my loaner – a fairly nondescript 6. They called later to say it was the fuel pump, and they'd be done sometime tomorrow.
Got a burrito from "Casa D's" for lunch today. Yummy. My meal for the day basically. Pork, rice, beans, salsa. There was a "Throwdown w/ Bobby Flay" episode on tonight where he went against a Cuban-American chef in a battle of roast pork. Looked good. I don't think I know of any Cuban restaurants around here, I'll have to keep my eye out.
Got my acceptance to the circulation course in Boston this August. Bought a ticket and sent the Travel Coordinator the details. Mary Beth's reply included "By the way, you are the first to have sent them in! Congratulations! If we were that kind of organization, I'd send you a toaster!". Heh.
Realized the other day that I'll be taking the "spare" guitar, aka the new one, on the trip. I could take the old one, but it's not really worth it to fish the battery out from the inside and unwrap it from its cushy envelope, and then risk it getting beat up on yet again. Huh. Was just about to say "And so this way I at least know the main guitar will be safe and sound when I return, ready for the next show". But, there may not be a show the following Monday. What happens after this run ends in July is currently up in the air.
The new case will be getting broken-in as well. Hopefully not too much. . .

Schizo weather today. At least the rain today had that sort of "spring rain" feel/smell to it.
Debuted three new pieces tonight. A rough show overall, playing-wise it felt to me. I'm saying that a lot lately. Maybe it just means I need to practice more.

Long Beach, CA
10:47 – Show last night OK. Iffy venue – rock club / bar. The stage was a mess, though large. Sound guy thought I was a control freak, or at least too uptight, I think. Curt called me up to play on the "Turkish Suite" – JH gracefully lending me his chair. I was pretty self-conscious.
Tom's set was great, again. We hope to give him some more space tonight- he joined for Hope, but tonight will probably be a "play until he's done soloing" deal.
Long Beach is interesting. Downtown is pretty snazzy. Tonight: San Diego. Driving back after the show ends (around 1 AM) to MP's. Leaving for LAX at 11 AM. MP + Cheryl have been great. Wonderful.
27:35 – back from the gig about an hour ago. Some pre-packing (re-distribution of cables and DIs), cheesecake eaten. An OK show [ed: I say that a lot] – good I suppose. Post-ball-game craiziness on the street. Many in audience there to see TomG. Late show – lots of audience trickle-out. 50 total, made some money at least. Pretty good sound.

Saturday: managed to get up on time to make it to calisthenics by 8. At rehearsal, worked on some new arrangements for the opening and a couple transitions. After that, went down to Elliot Bay Books to hear a talk by Jacob Needleman. I wasn't planning on going, but was glad I did. Nothing earth-shattering, but it was interesting.
Home for a nap after that. Played some bass, did some recording, watched some TV. Stayed up too late.
Sunday: slept pretty late. Watched Genghis Blues, which someone at work gave me a little while back. Interesting. Paul's life was sad and inspirational at the same time. Went up to the space to do some singing for about an hour. Watched some TV, had dinner, paid bills / balanced checkbooks.
Saw an ad for GH (xbox version) on TV today – first one I've seen, never saw one for the PS2 version.
So, "inner" life has been OK for the past few weeks. I'm a bit hesitant to draw too many conclusions why, but it seems pretty apparent that much of what ailed me before that was due to frustration, indecision, and worry. I still don't know quite what was up with all the "weird energy" – it was there, and driving me mad, but I was unable to apply it to anything constructive for the most part. Well, maybe that's not true, I did quite a bit more recording than usual. So, here I am now. Not exactly "back to normal". Three weeks have gone by very quickly. Still a bit frustrated, self-conscious, though able to let go of that for the most part. A few things are clear now, and the worry has mostly evaporated.

Wow, what a gloomy rainy day it was out there. Back from a good poker game at Tobin's in Columbia City. Quite a few people there this time around. A few of us grabbed dinner from the local Caribbean joint – the Creole fish, red snapper, was really good. And there were the usual manhattans, Jones BBQ, and assorted snacks as well. Was mostly having iffy luck, won a couple big hands that got me back to about break-even, then started blowing it as the night neared an end and I didn't really care about the ten bucks so much; ended with two fifty left. Had some fun watching Curt, Dean, and Jaxie try out Guitar Hero for the first time.
now when do I have to get up tomorrow. . .
music: Sonic Youth - Nurse; Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell; Res - How I Do (plus lots of Jeff Beck, ZZ Top, Tom Waits, and Led Zeppelin during poker).

Got out of bed a bit late this morning. Spent too much time today fighting w/ the tools I needed to do the work I was trying to do. Mediterranean food for lunch, yum, garlicalicious. Just sent off my application for the Special Circulation Project in MA this August.
Ran across RF's diary posts from his visit to the winter project in Spain this February. Good to see a bunch of familiar faces in the pictures. The whole thing w/ the "recording contract" is great, that had me laughing.
Someone mentioned Vulcanization at practice last night. . .ah, yes, that. Had to spend a little time on that during my practice tonight.
Poker night tomorrow.

Two years ago tonight (which was a Monday) was the first "official" Tuning The Air performance.
One year ago today I was in Argentina on a Guitar Craft course. Three years ago today I was on tour with the League of Crafty Guitarists – as stage manager and occasional performer – making our way down the West Coast, presently in the Bay Area for a few days.
Good practice/rehearsal tonight, everybody was there. Lots of work on the new stuff.

The capacity to do remedial calculus has just about left my brain. A couple basic infinite series expansions took about an hour of mostly blank staring. In the end I seem to be off by about a factor of two, as well, somewhere.
Sunny and cold today.
One of the audients last night was Dan Kirkdorffer, webmaster of Elephant Talk since 1997. My first post to the ET mailing list / digest was in September 1996. The real fun one though is from February 1997, in response to some questions RF posed to ET in general. Definitely a "wincer" reading it now, though I think I actually had about half a clue at the time.
music: Swans - Various Failures; New Order - Technique
Ed. Note: Wow, I titled this post "Wednesday", and wrote the date as "Monday". The former is explained by me looking at the computer clock when I posted (it was after midnight). I'm not sure about the latter.

Small-ish audience tonight. Only one first-timer. Premiered (for this group, anyway) KFAD during the encore. Rough but we got through it.
Took the car to the shop. They had no loaners, so didn't have time to look into the various issues while I waited. So, got the regular service done and scheduled an appointment next week for the other stuff.
Cold, windy, and rainy today. The whitecaps were spraying up over onto 520 this morning.
Just spent 45 minutes playing guitar for someone that isn't here.
music: Herbie Hancock - Headhunters; Opeth - Ghost Reveries; King Crimson - The Power to Believe

Up to my Dad's for easter brunch / dinner. Joined by my stepsister, her husband, their kid, his au pair, and her friend from Sweden. It was nice and sunny, so the egg hunt was outside this year. I swear I just did this like three months ago, it can't have been a year already. Scary. Brunch was yummy. The weather gradually got gray, windy, and rainy outside. Stuck around and caught up on things with Dad for a few hours after that. Home, watched some TV, played some bass.

A little catching up to do. Friday: out to see Bill play w/ Robyn at the Croc. A 10 PM show, with two opening acts. . .got there a bit after 10, missed most of the first act which I regretted after hearing their last couple songs. Wasn't sure if anyone else would be there, nobody I knew there at this time. The second act was Sean Nelson, of Harvey Danger fame. Quirky, clever pop song type stuff, a mix of his and some Nilsson songs. Christina and Curt showed up between that and the next set. Glad to not be completely by myself. Robyn and co. went on a little after 11:45. They played for about two hours. A build-up set; just Robyn, then Robyn and Bill, then Peter came out, finally Scott for the fourth song. It was good. I definitely most enjoyed the more upbeat songs where the band got to stretch out a bit. The encore was four or five songs long, including an early Pink Floyd song. Shows like this are really tough for me. Three and a half hours on my feet. My enthusiasm and attention were lagging by the end. A quick hi to Bill after the show, then home a little after two. I was starving, didn't really have dinner. So, by the time I'd had a snack and got to bed, it was around three.
Set the alarm for 7, but didn't wake up until 8. Did make it in time for the sitting at 9. It was a weird one today – cleanup day at the church apparently, so lots of activity outside. Shouting, hammering, screwdriving, doors slamming, etc. About 30 minutes in someone walked in the room, then make a quick retreat upon finding four folks sitting quietly on the floor. Curt went out to ask if he needed something – "No, just doing a walk-through". OK.
Rehearsal was mostly in the same vein as recent ones, with one exception – Diana was on hand to discuss and present some ideas for re-integrating some of the dance/movement into the show. Nothing concrete yet.
Home after that, napped from 3 until 6. Showered, ate a quick meal, and headed up to Cornish to see Gamelan Pacifica. Ran into Scott A. beforehand, chatted with him a bit. The show was good. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it also included the gamelan group from UW, that I'd seen at Folklife last year. The first half of the set was GP, playing some Javanese music and original compositions. Good to hear fresh stuff, even if some of it was maybe a little underdeveloped. The second set was the UW ensemble playing in Balinese style, then a marimba duo. The marimba duo was apparently a Balinese gamelan / mbira hybrid idea. I didn't really hear it. To me the sound was abstract, largely suspended / augmented explorations for two marimbas. Interesting, but it didn't fit in the show. One other interesting note, one of the pieces in the first set was in seven; not a common time signature for gamelan. You could hear it – the group is very impressive in their ability to play interlocking gamelan rhythms in four, but people definitely had their own ideas on what seven sounded like.
Headed up to Greenwood after that, to Chris and Meleah's new place. Good time there hanging out with a bunch of folks until about 1:30. Birthday cake, chocolate, wine, friends, cats, etc.
Easter brunch tomorrow afternoon.

Really nice out today. Sunny and just a little warm. Sunroof open on the drive to work. That's about all I got of it though, other than a short walk to get some dinner.
Managed to get a short little sound clip of the 1/3 to 1/2 to no subharmonic transitions for Bodo, not sure if he still wants to use it for the OA website.
The car hasn't died again, yay. It goes to the doctors Monday morning. It's still doing the not-wanting-to-start thing, also making a loud noise once in a while when I put it into reverse.
Getting to be about the time I just have to suck it up and submit my tax return. I don't really owe that much, but I've been hoping some light bulb will go off and I'll figure out how to reduce it.

Practice tonight focused entirely on KFAD and Jaxie's new piece. Christina came by to listen and brought some garlic parmesan bread. Stopped by Travis and Igor's for a bit afterwards for some chocolate-chip cookies and tequila (a surprisingly good combination).
All the way down I-5 afterwards it smelled like garbage; or really, more like that "Tacoma" smell. Wonder what that was all about.
music: Throwing Muses – s/t; Siouxsie and the Banshees - Tinderbox
Oh yeah - woke up at 5:30 or something like that this morning.

Woke up with a bit of a headache. Took a couple hours for it to dissipate. Got into a kind of funk as the day wore on. An old South Park helped me get out of that.
Been noticing lately that my hands are cold more often, and my cheeks flushed.
My car died on the highway this morning. Well, on an on-ramp. From the WSB to I-5. Traffic was stop-and go. Once, I stopped, and it stopped. shit! what the fuck? waved the girl behind me around, she just sat w/ a blank look on her face though. Put it in park, started it up again. It stuttered once when I stopped again, but didn't die. It's going in for a checkup the next available time slot.

So, what do you do when you play yet another show, and it feels OK, there are plenty of mistakes but generally it goes OK, nothing too special, and then two friends in the audience, who have been to dozens of the shows, say it was the best ever? What exactly did we do this time? Bill usually has good, detailed feedback about specifics (timing, tone, attention etc) that may make a given show better or worse than average. This time, however, nothing like that. It was just exceptionally good, apparently. Encouraging, but also frustrating. Well, it won't really be frustrating until next week (or the week after, or. . .) when it isn't quite as good. Who knows, maybe it was so good this week because I had new strings on the guitar. Actually, joking aside, what the hell was I thinking leaving the old ones on for so long.
Actually there was one thing out of the ordinary tonight – one really, spectacularly wrong note. Actually it was two notes. When it came Howard's turn for his two notes in the Peace Piece melody. . .the first note was a common flub, the wrong note but he cut it off immediately, that got everyone's attention including Howard's. Then he very confidently adjusted and played the next note and WOW that was definitely not it. Every single one of us just about had a cat fighting off the giggles, and thank goodness that was the last encore piece, as soon as we made it into the green room people exploded into laughter. I laughed so hard I cried, and my gut will be sore tomorrow.
Coooold out there tonight. Yahoo says 40 degrees currently.

April now. OK Spring, any time you're ready. Actually it was a bit sunny today. Some serious looking clouds hung over downtown in the evening though. Did some laundry today. Boxed up a bunch of old textbooks and other books I don't want anymore, and took them to the used book store. I'm sure there was one close by, but I decided to make a bit of a road trip out to the one in Crossroads. I went there a lot during high school w/ my parents. We'd get dinner at the food court, then some coffee at the Starbucks, take a look around Half-Price Books for a while, then go to the grocery store. A bit of a strange family habit, but at the time my Mom wasn't feeling like cooking much. And it was actually kind of a nice way to spend time with them. Anyway, got seventy bucks for the lot of the books. Thought about just "donating" them, but I think instead I'll just send that money on to an actual charity. Was going to get some dinner at the food court afterwards, but didn't realize that the mall closed long before the book store. So picked up a couple tacos on the way home.
Still can't get too much traction on the vocal subharmonics. Somehow today I did manage to record a bit that had the 1/6 and 1/4 subs going on – they're weak, but with their harmonics and the regular overtones, it actually sounds a bit like a low fifth interval resolving to octaves when it transitions. The 1/6 subharmonic is at around 22Hz. Bodo wants some clips for the OA website, but I don't think I've got anything clear enough yet. Without OA, I don't think I would've been able to figure out what was going on.

Up at 7. C harmonic minor arpeggios at calisthenics. Similar work at practice today as on Wednesday. Lunch afterwards at Burrito Loco, then over to Christina's new place to help unload the truck. She and Igor arrived around 2, the truck was already half empty when we got there at 2:30. Her apartment is nice, a large studio with high ceilings. It's on the ground floor, so unloading was super quick w/ all the people at hand. Said a quick hello and welcome, then had to take off to get back down to Ballard by 3. Met my sister/agent there, along with Dad and Sue, and we went to look at the in-progress condo. My first impression inside the place was that it was smaller than I expected. Not substantially, but noticeably. It's more s.f. than my current apartment, but broken up into more/smaller chunks. The kitchen / living room area is nice and open though, with lots of windows, which is good.
Standing in the space (such as it was – walls up and painted, kitchen cabinets going in, light fixtures mostly in), did answer some things for me. I still have a long ways to go before I figure out how I want to set things up there, however. It sounds like I'll have yet more time for that, though, as their agent said not to hold my breath about the closing date. It'll probably slip another two weeks at least.
Out to lunch / early dinner again after that, to Pegasus with the family. Not that I was hungry, but it was good to see them and hear about what's happening with them. Napped for a couple hours in the evening, then watched some TV and put new strings on the Ovation.
